England captain Andrew Strauss has bemoaned the performance of his side after they stumbled to a 6 wicket win against Netherlands in their opening game of the Cricket World Cup.
The Middlesex batsmen was dismayed after their bowling performance allowed the Netherlands to post an imposing total of 297, and demanded an improvement in their next game against India on Sunday, a game which bigfreebet will see them as second favourites for.
“We got a lot of things wrong with our bowling," Strauss said.
"We need to improve. The first 50 overs was a very poor performance and the last 10 was extremely poor."
Essex all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate was in fine form for the Netherlands as he hit 119 of just 110 balls, putting his side in a commanding position.
Jimmy Anderson suffered at the hands of the man of the match, recording woeful figures of 0-72.
England’s response began well as the new opening pair of Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen, promoted up the order for the tournament, attacked the Dutch bowling line-up aggressively.
The pair bought their hundred partnership up inside 17 overs, but soon after Pietersen continued his long running jinx against left-arm spinners after being caught off the bowling of Pieter Seelaar.
Strauss (88), along with Jonathan Trott (62) were the architects-in-chief of the recovery as their response began to slow and stutter, before a Ravi Bopara four eventually secured three points for England.
Trott, who averages an excellent 54.11 in one-day internationals, admitted England need to improve if they are to progress in the tournament.
It was one of those things that can happen. We got the result we wanted, but we need to be more consistent.”
"This result showed us what we need to work on and get our act together and come up with a few ideas." He added.
England, who were drawn in the same group as South Africa and the West indies, face India in their next group match in Bangalore on Sunday, after the match was switched from the 90,000 capacity Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata, which was deemed unfit to host the game.
With the top four from the seven team groups qualifying for the quarter-finals, England will be amongst the favourites with big free bet to move beyond the group stage, but may struggle in knock-out stages.
